Sermon given by Rev’d Camilla Walton

On Sunday 27 February 2011

2nd Sunday before Lent

Genesis 1. 1 - 2.3
Romans 8. 18 - 25

Matthew 6. 25 - end

I have always been sceptical about those who say lets open the Bible and see where it falls,  as if God has that much control. But there are times in life when I have to show humility and say, Yes Lord, you are more in control than I like to think, I am less important than I like to think and I must bow down before you and admit you lead my life and hold it in the palm of your hand.

in our readings today we have God saying how much he delights in this creation of which we are a part. How good it was once his glorious work was completed. The creation of which God was instigator was to be so magnificent even God rested and said: this is done, this is Good. This is complete. But there was a cost to free will in the universe.

Paul reminds those suffering terribly from persecution and troubles that the promise to them from God is for redemption from all they have suffered into an existence of wonderful fullness, everything into its full potential whether humans, animals or the earth itself – the whole creation told of in Genesis will be restored to that initial vision of God.

How timely when we see the suffering of those groaning under the natural disaster of the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and human disaster, human sin in Libya. Remember says God, I will make things new and those who suffer in this life will not be forgotten.

And how about the Gospel for saying to us God is in control?

Therefore I tell you do not worry about your life, v 25

We are not of little faith in St Michaels, we believe that God makes a difference and that we share in that difference too. In so much of what we do, caring for others, committing come what may of 12% of our income to those in need at home or overseas.

And of course causing such wonderful funds to be created for the building of our future life of church in the hall extension or resource centre.

‘Strive for the kingdom of God and his righteousness’:

What is that?

A kingdom, a place, where people give away their cloaks as well as their coats for others needs, in other words people who give by sacrificing something they need in order to do something.

Because the kingdom is a place where people want to serve other needs, where what matters is being the people who bring about change whilst caring for the present, not building up treasure, money and possessions that are worth nothing in God’s sight but building up love, action, charity, mercy and justice.

34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Lets live today well, lets live it together, lets live it in faith and in Christian love. Knowing we are truly blessed by the Lord.

Amen.
