Outside Giving

The Parish Share ensures we share resources around all of the parishes.

Many people assume the church has large cash reserves and income from land and investments but this is not so. One big cost is pensions for previous clergy whose life expectancy is now considerably longer than ever before.

Because the church now has to pay its own way in this Diocese, the Parish Share system ensures even the poorest parishes have the same amount of money to pay the priest.

Without your contributions, the Parish Share system could not work and some parishes might not be able to afford a priest and the living church could not continue in those areas where it is possibly most needed

Report from the Beaconsfield Church of England Team

Outside Giving Committee – April 2009

In 2008, the Outside Giving Committee on your behalf gave away £44,174. Of this amount, £11,000 was donated by St. Michael’s.

We allocate the money every six months in February and September. 84% goes to causes we support on a three year cycle and the rest goes to “contingencies”, i.e. other causes whose needs come to our attention.

Here are some extracts from our latest batch of “Thank You” letters to give you a feel of what the charities are doing.

United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (£4,032 during the year) have listed as one of the projects they are currently involved in

“St Nicholas’ Home for the Blind in Malaysia is providing the residents with the emotional, social and physical skills necessary for independent living.”

Mildmay (transforming AIDS care) (£2,466):

“Mildmay U.K. alone has had 154 admissions of patients with HIV/Aids to its rehabilitation centre. Close to 80% of those admitted returned to independent living. During 2008, 906 children were admitted to our paediatric hospital in Uganda, 82% of which were successfully discharged.”

CORD – Christian Outreach Relief and Development (£1,644)

“Our work in Burundi continues to grow as refugees return to find homes and infrastructure destroyed. With your support in 2009, CORD will be constructing a further 600 shelters for an estimated 3,600 refugees; we will be rehabilitating more schools and will continue with rain water harvesting and school garden programmes.”

Church Army (£4,410)

“God is working powerfully through our evangelists and projects to reach where they are and bring the love of Jesus through words and actions to the most hurting and broken of peoples in our society.”

Bible Lands (A contingency £340)

“We are in constant contact with the Diocese of Jerusalem who are coordinating support for the Al Ahli Hospital and with the St. John Hospital in Jerusalem who run the St. John Eye Clinic in Gaza.”

Slough Homeless Our Concern (A contingency £300)

“SHOC is the only local place where homeless and vulnerable clients can enjoy a hot meal, home comforts and help to be rehabilitated back into society…..”

Prospects (who work with people with learning difficulties) (A contingency £300)

“Services in Cornwall, Liverpool and Manchester are being developed………

God is faithful. Even through challenges to our Christian ethos, Prospects’ ministry continues to grow and we are committed to carrying out this work in the name of Christ.”

St Michael’s representatives on the Team Outside Giving Committee are Annie Bennett, Frances Hall and Margaret Skinner – do let us know of any cause you would like us to consider.
